The blow off valve operates by diverting the compressed air back into the intake system, downstream of the turbocharger or supercharger, rather than sending it back through the compressor. This action creates the characteristic sound often associated with blow off valves. Blow off valves come in various designs, including atmospheric (vented to the atmosphere) & recirculating (redirecting the air back into the intake system).
