Fix Slow Cranking and Heat-Soak Starting Problems

C5 and C6 Corvettes are commonly affected by aging, undersized or high-resistance starter, alternator and ground cables. Resistance increases as the cables and terminals age, and underhood heat makes an already marginal circuit work even harder. The result can be slow cranking, inconsistent charging or a Corvette that refuses to restart after it is fully warmed up.

The SMG Hot Start Kit replaces the critical high-current wiring with 0/2-gauge welding-grade copper cable, professionally terminated ends and weather-sealed connections. It is a straightforward mechanical solution to a voltage-delivery problem no control modules or electronic workarounds.

Choose Your Kit

Underhood Kit

Replaces the three primary underhood cables:

• Starter power cable
• Alternator charge cable
• Primary engine ground cable

This is the correct choice when the battery remains in the factory front location and the customer needs to renew the high-current underhood circuit.

Full Remote-Battery Kit

Includes the complete Underhood Kit plus the extended high-current cables required for rear-mounted or relocated battery installations. This option provides a complete front-to-rear electrical path for Corvettes with remote battery configurations, including applicable Z06, Grand Sport and modified vehicles.

Starter-Included Options

Both cable packages are available with a retrofit OEM AC Delco mini starter. The compact, high-torque starter offers improved clearance, lower weight and faster cranking particularly helpful on high-compression, header-equipped or heat-soaked LS combinations.

Starter connection: Starter-included C5/C6 kit options include the LS plug adapter required for this retrofit. Cable-only kit options do not include a starter or adapter.

Need only the starter? The SMG high-torque mini starter is available separately, with the adapter included only for LS-engine retrofit applications that require it. The standalone starter also covers C7 Corvette and sixth-generation Camaro V8; this cable kit remains for C5/C6 Corvette.

Basic Installation Instructions

Replace the corresponding factory cables, connection for connection. Identify both ends of each original cable before removal, then install its replacement at those same connection points. Supplied cable lengths and routing may differ from stock.

1. Prepare the vehicle. Turn the ignition off, remove the key and let the engine and exhaust cool. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal. If under-car access is required, use the vehicle's specified lifting points and properly rated supports; never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
2. Identify and document the original connections. Take photos and label the starter power, alternator charge and engine ground cables before removing them. Match each replacement to the circuit it replaces. Full remote-battery kits also include extended cables for the remote battery configuration.
3. Replace one cable at a time. With the battery disconnected, remove the original cable and install the corresponding SMG cable at the same connection points. Keep track of any other wires sharing a terminal and return them to their original connections. Do not guess if a connection cannot be identified.
4. Check the connections. Ensure contact surfaces are clean and free of corrosion, terminals sit flat, and fasteners are tightened to the applicable vehicle or component manufacturer's specification. Refit protective boots and covers over positive terminals.
5. Route and secure the cables. Follow the factory path where practical, allowing for the replacement cable size and length. Keep cables clear of exhaust heat, belts, steering parts, sharp edges and pinch points. Secure them without pulling the terminals tight, and protect any cable passing through a panel.
6. Inspect and test. Verify polarity, every connection and all clearances before reconnecting the battery. Reconnect the positive terminal first and the negative terminal last. Check starting and charging operation. If the original symptom remains, diagnose the battery, starter, charging system and remaining connections.

Installation Expectations

Basic mechanical and electrical familiarity is required. These steps cover cable replacement; use the applicable service information for vehicle access, torque specifications and starter replacement when fitting a starter-included kit. Professional installation is recommended if you cannot confidently identify the original cables and their attachment points.

Defective-product replacement is covered. The video and basic instructions above are provided as installation references; individual installation walkthroughs are not included with the product. Vehicle condition, headers, battery relocation and previous wiring modifications can change the installation substantially. Consult a qualified local installer for vehicle-specific routing or diagnostic work.

Questions unrelated to a product defect may be handled as paid technical service at SMG’s standard shop rate.
