Heat Protection - Turbo Blanket - Titanium
Titanium Turbo Heat Shield or turbo blanket for various turbochargers available
Effective heat protection for turbocharger exhaust housings
Turbo blankets are preformed, flexible heat shields which are put on a turbocharger exhaust housing so the temperatures can be kept inside the housing and not in or near the rest of the components in the engine bay. Additionally, that heat kept inside the housing could increase the efficiency, response time and to an increase in the turbochargers overall performance.
NOTE: This blanket may smoke upon it's first heat cycle! This is completely normal and expected behavior once it sees heat for the first time. It's a simple off-gassing process and burning of the chemicals due its initial manufacturing process. A general rule of thumb is give it around 50 or so miles for any smoking from the blanket to disappear.
Key benefits and advantages
Will a BOOST blanket turbo really reduce my engine bay temps?
The short answer is yes, absolutely. The exhaust turbines can give off well over 1200°C. Most turbos do not operate consistently anywhere near that temperature, the majority of the aftermarket turbos operate safely well under 1000°C and our blankets are rated to withstand much more than that. Regardless, that is a lot of heat that just soaks in the engine bay and can lead to messy heat management. Everything under the bay works better when things are cooler - especially your intake and charge pipes! If you want to prevent melting crucial parts and/or sensors, lengthen the life of your turbo, and drastically reduce the heat around your engine, you're going to want a turbo blanket.
Are there any actual performance gains from usinig a turbo blanket?
If you are keeping the heat inside the exhaust turbine housing, that is doing a several things at once. That heat would normally escape the housing through radiation, naturally increasing the surrounding ambient temperature. With less heat loss, its efficiency increases, which leads to better spooling, better airflow and better response. There isn't a horsepower number we can attach to this, but we can say that a blanket helps any turbo achieve its true potential every time you hit boost.
How are these blankets maintained?
These blankets are intended to be long lasting without much maintenance. We do recommend from time to time taking it off and checking to make sure it is still properly fitted or there isn't anything stuck inside or. All you need to do to take off the blanket is reverse the procedure for how you put it on - just remove the metal spring to untighten the fitment.
Are these blankets flammable?
These turbo blankets are made to keep heat in, so the surface stays relatively cool. But they are not meant to be fluid-proof. If oil, fuel or any other flammable liquid gets onto the blanket without it being addressed, it's possible it can soak through the blanket and cause an ignition. We recommend to take the same precaution you would in any other normal situation to keep flammable liquids near the turbo as safe, secure and leak-free as possible.
